Ezra 10:6
“Then Ezra rose up from before God’s house, and went into the room of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib. When he came there, he ate no bread, nor drank water; for he mourned because of their trespass of the captivity.”
What does Ezra 10:6 mean?
Ezra had just learned that many Israelites who'd returned from exile had married people from surrounding nations, breaking God's law. Rather than rush into decisions, he withdrew to a private room and entered a period of deep mourning and fasting, refusing even basic food and water. This wasn't punishment he was inflicting on himself, but rather the physical expression of genuine grief over his people's unfaithfulness and what it meant for their relationship with God. His willingness to sit with the sorrow before taking action shows us that sometimes the most important response to discovering we've strayed is to pause, grieve sincerely, and let that weight settle in our hearts before moving forward.
