Ezra 10:13
“But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand outside. This is not a work of one day or two, for we have greatly transgressed in this matter.”
What does Ezra 10:13 mean?
The people of Jerusalem have just discovered that many of them married non-Israelite women during the exile, which violated the community's religious laws. When their leader Ezra calls them to address this serious breach, the people acknowledge they're facing a real problem: it's the rainy season, there are thousands of people involved, and untangling all these relationships will take far more than a day or two. Their response shows both the practical difficulty of what they're asking and their recognition that the situation is genuinely serious and widespread. What's striking here is the honesty. Rather than making excuses or minimizing what happened, they're saying yes, this matters, this will be hard, and it will take time. Sometimes when we've drifted from what we know is right, the path back feels overwhelming because it's not a quick fix. But acknowledging how deep the problem goes and how much work it will take can actually be the beginning of real change.
