“Therefore will I also deal in wrath. My eye won’t spare, neither will I have pity. Though they cry in my ears with a loud voice, yet I will not hear them.””
What does Ezekiel 8:18 mean?
God is describing what happens when a people turn away from him so completely that they've become unreachable. He's not saying he enjoys refusing to listen, but rather that at a certain point, persistent rejection of him means his warnings stop and consequences follow. When people ignore his gentle guidance over and over, there comes a moment when further pleas fall on ears that have already decided to turn elsewhere. This is one of the hardest passages in Scripture because it describes a kind of spiritual hardness that's almost impenetrable. Yet even here, the point isn't that God delights in judgment, but that he respects human choice. If someone refuses to listen when God calls, there's a real sense in which they've closed a door that eventually locks. The passage reminds us that turning away from God isn't consequence-free, and that indifference to his voice is its own form of tragedy.
