What does Ezekiel 6:5 mean?
This is one of the hardest images in Scripture, spoken by God through the prophet Ezekiel during the exile of Judah to Babylon. The people had turned away from God to worship idols, and this verse describes the devastating consequence: their own dead would be scattered and desecrated near the very altars where they'd offered false worship. It's meant to shock them into understanding that abandoning God leads to complete destruction, even beyond death. While the language feels brutal to us, Ezekiel used extreme imagery because the situation was extreme. The people had rejected every gentle warning.
