Ezekiel 40:1
“In the twenty-fifth year of our captivity, in the beginning of the year, in the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after that the city was struck, in the same day, Yahweh’s hand was on me, and he brought me there.”
What does Ezekiel 40:1 mean?
Ezekiel received this vision during the Babylonian exile, at a moment when the Jewish people had been away from Jerusalem for about twenty-five years and the city itself had been destroyed fourteen years prior. The precision of these dates tells us this wasn't a random moment: God chose a specific time to lift the prophet up and show him something important. When Ezekiel says "the hand of Yahweh was on me," he's describing how God's presence and power came upon him, transporting him into a spiritual vision. In the midst of grief, loss, and displacement, God reached out to His prophet with something to reveal, suggesting that even in exile and ruin, God hadn't abandoned His people and had plans they couldn't yet see.
