Ezekiel 36:17

“Son of man, when the house of Israel lived in their own land, they defiled it by their ways and by their deeds. Their way before me was as the uncleanness of a woman in her impurity.

What does Ezekiel 36:17 mean?

The prophet Ezekiel is describing how the people of Israel had turned away from God while living in the land God had given them. Rather than living as God had called them to, they pursued their own desires and allowed practices that violated God's standards to become normal in their society. The comparison to ritual impurity reflects the Old Testament understanding that some things separated people from God's presence, and Ezekiel is saying Israel's behavior created that kind of spiritual distance. This isn't about shame but about the reality that our choices matter spiritually, and when we consistently turn from God's ways, we create separation from him. Ezekiel delivers this hard truth as part of God's call for the people to recognize their situation before they can turn around and be restored.
