“As you rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel because it was desolate, so will I do to you. You will be desolate, Mount Seir, and all Edom, even all of it. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.’””
What does Ezekiel 35:15 mean?
Mount Seir (representing Edom) had celebrated when Israel was conquered and scattered, treating their neighbor's tragedy as an opportunity for personal gain. God is saying that the same destruction and emptiness they gloated over will come to them, and in experiencing it themselves, they'll finally understand who God is and that his justice isn't random or powerless. This speaks to a hard truth many of us learn the difficult way: cruelty toward others, especially during their most vulnerable moments, doesn't go unnoticed. There's a sobering symmetry here, too, in that Edom experiences the very desolation they mocked. For those of us going through seasons of loss or abandonment, it can bring a quiet comfort to know that God sees when others rejoice in our pain, and that he doesn't let such things pass without consequence.
