Ezekiel 33:4
“then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet, and doesn’t heed the warning, if the sword comes, and takes him away, his blood will be on his own head.”
What does Ezekiel 33:4 mean?
When a watchman in ancient Israel sounded the trumpet, it was meant to alert people to danger so they could escape. If someone heard that warning but chose to ignore it anyway, and then was killed by the coming threat, their death was on their own conscience, not the watchman's. Ezekiel is using this image to explain God's responsibility versus ours: God sends warnings through his prophets and through our own sense of what's right, but we're accountable for what we do with that information. The hard truth here is that we can't blame God or others when we ignore clear warnings and face the consequences of our own choices. There's actually grace woven into this too, though, because it means we have real agency, real warning, and real opportunity to listen.
