“When I tell the righteous that he will surely live; if he trusts in his righteousness, and commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds will be remembered; but he will die in his iniquity that he has committed.”
What does Ezekiel 33:13 mean?
God is reminding us through the prophet Ezekiel that righteousness isn't a permanent badge we can earn once and then coast on forever. If someone has been living right but then deliberately turns toward sin, trusting that their past goodness will cover for them, that's a dangerous misunderstanding of how God works. It's like thinking a lifetime of deposits in a bank account means you can endlessly overdraw without consequences. The point isn't that one slip-up destroys everything, but rather that actively choosing to sin while banking on your reputation with God shows you've fundamentally turned away from Him. When that happens, it's the current direction of your life that matters, not the righteousness you've abandoned. This is meant as a wake-up call, not a threat meant to paralyze us. God speaks like this because He wants us to stay awake to the choices we're making right now, especially during seasons when we might rationalize drifting away from Him.
