Ezekiel 31:17
“They also went down into Sheol with him to those who are slain by the sword; yes, those who were his arm, who lived under his shadow in the middle of the nations.”
What does Ezekiel 31:17 mean?
This passage describes how those who depended on a powerful ruler fall with him when his empire crumbles. The image is of a great tree (representing Egypt's pharaoh) being cut down, and all the smaller plants and creatures that lived in its shade falling with it. When the ruler loses his strength and authority, everyone connected to his power and protection goes down to Sheol, the place of the dead. The deeper truth here is about the fragility of earthly power and those who tie their lives to it. The people who "lived under his shadow" were secure only as long as the ruler's strength lasted.
