Ezekiel 3:27
“But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth, and you shall tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh.’ He who hears, let him hear; and he who refuses, let him refuse; for they are a rebellious house.””
What does Ezekiel 3:27 mean?
God is promising Ezekiel that when it's time to speak, God will give him the words and courage he needs to deliver His message. The phrase "when I speak with you, I will open your mouth" means God will enable and empower him, not that Ezekiel will be a puppet without agency. The second part recognizes a hard truth that Ezekiel must accept: some people will listen and some won't, and that's not his failure. God is essentially telling him, "Do your part faithfully, but understand that people have the freedom to reject the message." This would have been important for Ezekiel to hear, since he was called to speak to a stubborn people who were unlikely to repent. The permission to let people refuse is actually freeing, because it reminds us that we're not responsible for forcing belief or change in others, only for speaking truth with faithfulness and love.
