What does Ezekiel 24:22 mean?
When Ezekiel's wife died suddenly, God told him not to perform the normal rituals of grief that his people practiced, like covering his face and eating special bread prepared during mourning. This wasn't cruelty, but a living sign to the people around him that something even worse was coming, the destruction of Jerusalem, which would be so devastating that traditional mourning wouldn't be adequate to express it. The command asks us to consider how our actions speak louder than words. Ezekiel's refusal to grieve in the expected way forced people to ask questions and listen to his message about what God was warning them. Sometimes bearing difficult things without the comfort of familiar rituals can wake us up to deeper spiritual realities we might otherwise miss.
