What does Ezekiel 23:5 mean?
Ezekiel uses the story of two sisters (Oholah and Oholibah) as a painful metaphor for Israel and Judah's unfaithfulness to God. Oholah represents the northern kingdom of Israel, and here the prophet is describing how she abandoned her covenant with God to chase after political alliances with Assyria, the superpower of that time. The language of prostitution captures how deeply this felt like betrayal, a turning away from the one who had claimed her and cared for her. What Ezekiel is really saying is that Israel traded her security and identity in God for the false promise of human power and protection, and this cost her everything when Assyria eventually conquered her.
