What does Ezekiel 23:13 mean?
Ezekiel uses the painful image of unfaithful wives to describe how Israel and Judah turned away from God toward other nations and their gods. By this point in the chapter, the prophet has already shown how both kingdoms made alliances with foreign powers and adopted their religious practices, becoming spiritually compromised. When he says they "both went the same way," he's emphasizing that despite having the chance to learn from each other's mistakes, they followed the same destructive path of abandoning their covenant with God. The repetition of this pattern matters because it shows how easily we can rationalize our own spiritual drift by watching others do the same thing. There's a kind of shared justification in numbers that can blind us to where we're actually headed. The sorrow in Ezekiel's words isn't judgment for judgment's sake, but the grief of watching people you care about repeat the same costly mistakes.
