What does Ezekiel 20:32 mean?
God is responding to the Israelites' secret desire to abandon him and worship idols like the surrounding nations do. They're imagining a life where they could simply blend in, dropping their faith and following whatever gods everyone else follows, and God is saying: that's not going to happen. He's not allowing it. This speaks to a deep human temptation, especially when we feel tired or left out. We sometimes think that abandoning what we believe would make life easier, that we'd finally fit in or find peace by just doing what everyone else does. But God is saying our half-formed plans to turn away from him won't come to pass. He holds onto us even when we're tempted to let go of him. It's both a firm boundary and a kind of promise, even when his people aren't being faithful.
