“Nevertheless I withdrew my hand, and worked for my name’s sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I brought them out.”
What does Ezekiel 20:22 mean?
Even when God's people deserved punishment for their rebellion in the wilderness, God held back his full judgment because his own reputation was at stake. The nations watching Israel's journey had seen God's power in the exodus, and if he destroyed the people completely, it would look like he couldn't follow through on his promises or that his power wasn't real. So God acted out of mercy, but also out of a kind of integrity, choosing to preserve his people so that his name would remain honored among the world. There's something both humbling and comforting here: God doesn't save us because we've earned it, but sometimes he protects us for reasons that go beyond what we deserve, connected to his own character and what he wants to be known for in the world.
