What does Ezekiel 20:13 mean?
God is recounting Israel's long pattern of turning away from him, even after he rescued them from Egypt. They refused to follow his ways, dismissed his laws, and particularly disrespected the Sabbath, which was meant to be a sign of their covenant relationship with him. What makes this hard to read is that God is describing a genuine consequence for their rebellion: when people reject the very things designed to sustain their spiritual life, separation and hardship naturally follow. This isn't about God arbitrarily punishing them out of anger, but about the real weight of choosing a different path. Even in this moment of warning, there's an underlying truth that God's laws exist not to control us, but to help us flourish.
