Ezekiel 18:4
“Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine. The soul who sins, he shall die.”
What does Ezekiel 18:4 mean?
God is establishing a crucial principle here: every person belongs to him, and every person stands before him individually. Just because your parents made certain choices, or lived a certain way, doesn't mean you're locked into their fate or failures. The weight of this passage comes in that final sentence, which cuts through any excuse we might make: sin has real consequences, and we can't hide behind someone else's righteousness or blame. In Ezekiel's time, people were saying "our fathers ate sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge"—in other words, they felt trapped by inherited guilt. But God is saying something liberating and sobering at once: you are accountable for your own choices, which means you're also free to make different ones. That's hard truth wrapped in genuine hope.
