Ezekiel 18:31
“Cast away from you all your transgressions, in which you have transgressed; and make yourself a new heart and a new spirit: for why will you die, house of Israel?”
What does Ezekiel 18:31 mean?
God is speaking directly to the people of Israel about their need to turn around before it's too late. When the prophet tells them to "cast away" their transgressions, he's inviting them to actively reject the sins they've been holding onto, not to pretend those actions never happened, but to stop letting them define the direction of their lives. The call to "make yourself a new heart and a new spirit" is striking because it puts responsibility on them, not just on waiting for God to change them, though God's grace makes transformation possible. The urgency in the final question, "why will you die?" isn't a threat meant to terrify but more like a parent asking a child about to walk off a cliff: "Why would you choose that?"
