Ezekiel 18:29

Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ House of Israel, aren’t my ways fair? Aren’t your ways unfair?

What does Ezekiel 18:29 mean?

When we're suffering or facing consequences, it's tempting to think God's rules seem arbitrary or harsh, while our own choices feel justified. Ezekiel challenges this by turning the mirror around: God is asking Israel to honestly examine whether their ways have actually been fair, both to others and to themselves. The core truth here is that God's justice isn't unfair for holding us accountable, it's fair because it's consistent and gives us real freedom to choose differently. If we find ourselves thinking "God isn't being fair," it's worth asking whether we're seeing the full picture of our own decisions and their ripple effects.
