Ezekiel 18:19
““Yet you say, ‘Why doesn’t the son bear the iniquity of the father?’ When the son has done that which is lawful and right, and has kept all my statutes, and has done them, he will surely live.”
What does Ezekiel 18:19 mean?
Ezekiel speaks to people who felt trapped by their parents' failures, believing they were doomed to inherit their guilt. God makes a radical promise here: your life is your own, and your choices are what matter. When you live honestly and follow God's ways, you will experience life and blessing, regardless of what your family did before you. This is deeply hopeful for anyone who has carried shame about their background or felt defined by inherited brokenness. God is saying that while we may inherit circumstances or pain from previous generations, we don't inherit their moral debt. You get to write a new chapter.
