Ezekiel 16:5
“No eye pitied you, to do any of these things to you, to have compassion on you; but you were cast out in the open field, because you were abhorred in the day that you were born.”
What does Ezekiel 16:5 mean?
Ezekiel uses the image of an abandoned newborn to describe Jerusalem's desperate spiritual condition, rejected and left to die. The verse captures a moment of complete desolation, where no one stepped in to offer even basic care or kindness. This harsh imagery isn't meant to be cruel, but rather to wake people up to how far they've drifted from God's protection and how urgently they need to return to him. What follows in this passage is even more powerful: despite this terrible abandonment, God himself will come and rescue the forsaken child, showing that his love isn't based on worthiness but on his own choosing compassion.
