“Will wood be taken of it to make anything? Will men take a pin of it to hang any vessel on it?”
What does Ezekiel 15:3 mean?
God is asking Ezekiel a pointed question about the usefulness of a grapevine's wood. Unlike oak or cedar that can be crafted into tools, furniture, or structural supports, grapewood is too weak and brittle to hold even something as light as a hanging vessel. The prophet is being led to see that a grapevine's only real value comes from bearing fruit, not from its timber. This becomes a metaphor for Israel's purpose: the people were meant to produce righteousness and faithfulness, but instead they've become spiritually unfruitful, leaving them with no other reason for God to spare them from judgment. It's a sobering image that gets at the heart of accountability—we, too, exist for a purpose beyond just taking up space.
