“Therefore speak to them, and tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “Every man of the house of Israel who takes his idols into his heart, and puts the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face, and comes to the prophet; I Yahweh will answer him therein according to the multitude of his idols;”
What does Ezekiel 14:4 mean?
God is saying that when someone's heart is wrapped up in false gods or false beliefs, and they come seeking guidance anyway, He will respond to them in a way that matches where their heart actually is. The "idols" here aren't just statues, but anything we've placed at the center of our lives instead of God: money, status, control, a relationship, our own will. If we're holding onto these things while asking God for direction, we can't expect to receive clear spiritual guidance, because we're fundamentally divided in what we're seeking. It's less about punishment and more about a natural consequence: you can't sincerely ask God for help while your deepest loyalty lies elsewhere. The good news hidden in this stern message is that God does see us and respond to us, but He invites us to honest self-examination about what we're really serving.
