Ezekiel 12:19
“Tell the people of the land, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh concerning the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the land of Israel: “They will eat their bread with fearfulness, and drink their water in dismay, that her land may be desolate, and all that is therein, because of the violence of all those who dwell therein.”
What does Ezekiel 12:19 mean?
Ezekiel was delivering a hard message to the people of Jerusalem during a time of deep spiritual rebellion and injustice. God is warning them that their daily life, even eating and drinking, will become shadowed by anxiety and dread because of the violence and wrongdoing embedded in their society. This isn't arbitrary punishment but a natural consequence: when communities turn away from God and hurt one another, that fracture works its way into everything, leaving people unable to find peace even in simple things. The message carries both warning and invitation. God is saying, "Look at where this path is leading you," hoping they'll turn back. For us today, it's a sober reminder that injustice and cruelty don't stay contained; they poison the whole culture and steal joy from everyone in it, including those doing the harm.
