Ezekiel 11:1
“Moreover the Spirit lifted me up, and brought me to the east gate of Yahweh’s house, which looks eastward. Behold, twenty-five men were at the door of the gate; and I saw among them Jaazaniah the son of Azzur, and Pelatiah the son of Benaiah, princes of the people.”
What does Ezekiel 11:1 mean?
Ezekiel has a vision where God's Spirit physically transports him to Jerusalem's temple, to the eastern gate. There he encounters twenty-five leaders of the people, including two men named specifically: Jaazaniah and Pelatiah. The point isn't really about the gate itself or even these particular men's identities, but that Ezekiel is being shown something happening right in the heart of Jerusalem's religious center. What follows in this passage is God's critique of these leaders' actions and their false confidence that they're safe. It's a moment where God pulls back the curtain to show the prophet what's really going on behind closed doors in the places where people felt most secure.
