What does Ezekiel 1:28 mean?
Ezekiel is trying to describe something he witnessed that completely overwhelmed him, and he reaches for the most breathtaking image he knows: a rainbow after a storm. Just as a rainbow's beauty and light fill the sky, he saw God's presence surrounded by radiant brightness that was almost impossibly magnificent. The experience was so overwhelming that he fell facedown, unable to remain standing in the presence of such glory. What's powerful here is that Ezekiel doesn't give us a neat, detailed picture of God's appearance. Instead, he uses comparisons and descriptions of light and color because human words struggle under the weight of encountering the divine. His physical response, dropping to his face, shows us that this wasn't an intellectual or comfortable moment, but something that shook him to his core.
