Exodus 8:22
“I will set apart in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end you may know that I am Yahweh on the earth.”
What does Exodus 8:22 mean?
God is promising Moses that while flies will plague Egypt during the second plague, His own people living in Goshen will be completely spared. This distinction matters deeply: it's not just about protection, but about making it unmistakably clear to everyone that God is acting with purpose and presence in the situation. The Egyptians will see their land ravaged while the Israelites' region remains untouched, and there's no way to explain that away as coincidence or natural disaster. For a community in slavery, this promise would have been both a comfort and a sign that they hadn't been abandoned, even in oppression.
