Exodus 8:18
“The magicians tried with their enchantments to produce lice, but they couldn’t. There were lice on man, and on animal.”
What does Exodus 8:18 mean?
When the plague of lice struck Egypt, even Pharaoh's own magicians couldn't replicate what God was doing. They had managed tricks with the earlier plagues, turning water to blood and producing frogs, but this time they hit a wall. Their elaborate techniques and knowledge simply couldn't manufacture something so impossibly small and widespread. This moment marks a turning point in the story. The magicians themselves recognize they're facing something beyond natural explanation or sleight of hand, and they tell Pharaoh, "This is the finger of God." Sometimes we face situations where our usual resources, skills, and problem-solving abilities just don't work. Those moments, as difficult as they are, can become opportunities to recognize we're encountering something bigger than ourselves and to turn toward God instead of relying only on our own power.
