“Moses returned to Yahweh, and said, “Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Why is it that you have sent me?”
What does Exodus 5:22 mean?
When Moses first went to Pharaoh demanding freedom for the Israelites, things got worse instead of better. Pharaoh increased the workload, making the enslaved people suffer even more, and they blamed Moses for making their situation unbearable. In his distress, Moses turns to God with raw, honest questions: Why did you send me if this is what happens? Why are things falling apart? This moment captures something deeply real about faith. Moses isn't being punished for doubt here, he's bringing his legitimate pain and confusion directly to God. When circumstances seem to contradict what God promised, it's actually okay to ask why. The passage shows us that wrestling with disappointment and even anger toward God is part of a genuine relationship with him, not a failure of it. God doesn't reject Moses for his questions, but responds and continues the plan forward.
