Exodus 5:12
βSo the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.β
What does Exodus 5:12 mean?
When Pharaoh refused Moses' request to let the Israelites worship in the wilderness, he punished them by demanding they continue making bricks but without being supplied straw anymore. The people had to leave their work sites and search the fields themselves for stubble (leftover stalks) to use as binding material. This verse captures the cruel bind they were in: same impossible quota, but now with added labor to find their own resources, making their situation even more desperate and exhausting.
