Exodus 5:10
“The taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I will not give you straw.”
What does Exodus 5:10 mean?
When Moses first asked Pharaoh to let the Hebrew slaves go, Pharaoh responded not with freedom but with cruelty. He ordered that the enslaved people no longer receive straw for making bricks, yet still had to produce the same quota of finished bricks. It was a punishment designed to break their spirits and make them blame Moses for making their situation worse. This moment captures a painful truth: sometimes standing up for what's right can feel like it makes things harder before they get better. The people were suffering deeply, and their suffering intensified because of the plea for justice. If you're in a season where doing the right thing has brought unexpected hardship, or where standing for your values has cost you something, this passage acknowledges that's real and it's difficult. God hadn't abandoned the Hebrews in that moment, even though it felt that way, and their liberation did come, even though the path there was brutally hard.
