What does Exodus 40:6 mean?
The altar of burnt offering was where the Israelites brought sacrifices, and placing it right at the entrance meant it was the first thing people encountered when coming to worship. This positioning symbolized that approach to God begins with acknowledging sin and making offerings for reconciliation, not by rushing straight into God's presence. The outer placement also made practical sense: the altar involved fire and animal sacrifice, so it needed to be in the open courtyard rather than inside the tent itself. For the ancient Israelites, this layout taught that meeting with God requires intention, preparation, and a willingness to deal honestly with what separates us from him.
