What does Exodus 39:9 mean?
The breastplate was a sacred piece of clothing worn by Israel's high priest, and this verse describes its precise construction: a small square folded double for extra thickness and durability. A span (the distance from thumb to pinky when your hand is spread) was roughly nine inches, so this wasn't a large garment. The doubling served a practical purpose, holding the twelve stones that represented Israel's tribes and creating pockets where the priest carried the Urim and Thummim (sacred objects used for seeking God's guidance).
