What does Exodus 35:3 mean?
On the Sabbath, the Israelites were called to stop their regular work and rest, and that included not starting fires. Fire-building was labor that kept daily routines going, so the prohibition was really about ceasing from productive activity and the busyness that came with it. This law created a rhythm of complete rest, where people set aside even the practical necessities they'd normally handle without thinking.
