Exodus 34:9
“He said, “If now I have found favor in your sight, Lord, please let the Lord go among us; although this is a stiff-necked people; pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.””
What does Exodus 34:9 mean?
Moses is standing in a vulnerable moment, asking God to stay present with the people despite their failures. He's being honest about who they are—stubborn, prone to turning away—but he's also appealing to God's character and asking for grace anyway. When he asks God to "take us for your inheritance," he's essentially saying, "Make us yours. Claim us as your own people, flaws and all." There's something beautiful here about not pretending to be better than we are while still hoping for restoration. Moses isn't making excuses for the people's behavior, but he is trusting that God's commitment to them runs deeper than their mistakes.
