“The children of Israel saw Moses’ face, that the skin of Moses’ face shone: and Moses put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him.”
What does Exodus 34:35 mean?
After Moses encountered God on Mount Sinai, his face literally glowed with God's presence, and the sight was so striking that it frightened the Israelites. Rather than let that fear keep him separated from the people, Moses would unveil his face when speaking God's words to them, allowing them to see the evidence of his encounter. He'd cover it again afterward, not out of vanity or shame, but perhaps to protect the people from constant awe, letting them return to ordinary life and relationships. This strange detail captures something profound: sometimes bearing witness to God's presence means being willing to show others what that looks like, even when it's unusual or unsettling.
