Exodus 34:30
“When Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come near him.”
What does Exodus 34:30 mean?
Moses had been face to face with God on Mount Sinai for forty days, receiving the Ten Commandments and God's instructions for the people. When he came back down carrying the stone tablets, his face was literally glowing from the encounter, so radiant that Aaron and the Israelites couldn't bear to look at him or approach him. Their fear shows how overwhelming God's presence had become visible in Moses himself, though it also hints at something that would become important later: Moses would eventually wear a veil to soften the effect on the people. What happened here isn't meant to make God seem distant or harsh, but rather to show how transforming an encounter with the holy truly is, and how it leaves a mark on us in ways both beautiful and humbling.
