What does Exodus 33:3 mean?
God is promising the Israelites that he'll still give them the rich, abundant land he swore to Abraham, but there's a hard condition attached. Because they've repeatedly resisted him and turned to idolatry, God says he won't travel with them directly, since his holy presence among a rebellious people would be dangerous to them—they'd be consumed by it. It's like saying, "I'll keep my promise, but I have to protect you from myself right now, because you're not ready." This comes after the golden calf incident, when Moses had just come down from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments to find the people worshiping an idol. The "stiff-necked" phrase captures how they keep turning away despite seeing God's mighty works. The offer of land without God's immediate presence is both an act of mercy (sparing them from destruction) and a consequence (they lose the closeness they could have had). It's a painful reminder that God's promises don't erase the reality of our choices.
