Exodus 33:1
“Yahweh spoke to Moses, “Depart, go up from here, you and the people that you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your offspring.’”
What does Exodus 33:1 mean?
God is reminding Moses of the original promise made long before, during the time of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—that their descendants would inherit the land of Canaan. Even after the people have failed (they built a golden calf while Moses was on Mount Sinai), God isn't abandoning the plan; He's directing them to continue the journey toward the promised land. This shows that God's commitments run deeper than our mistakes, and His purposes extend across generations. The phrase "you and the people that you have brought up" also subtly shifts focus—Moses may feel like he's failed as a leader, but God is reminding him that this journey belongs to God first, and the people are ultimately His.
