Exodus 30:9
“You shall offer no strange incense on it, nor burnt offering, nor meal offering; and you shall pour no drink offering on it.”
What does Exodus 30:9 mean?
God is telling Moses that the altar of incense is reserved for one sacred purpose only: burning the specific incense blend he's prescribed. No shortcuts, no substitutions, no mixing in other offerings or rituals that belong to different altars elsewhere in the tabernacle. It's a bit like being told to use a particular tool only for its intended job, not to repurpose it for convenience. This command reflects something important about worship in ancient Israel: different objects and sacrifices had their own proper places and purposes. By keeping the incense altar dedicated solely to incense, God was teaching his people that reverence involves paying attention to detail and honoring boundaries he sets.
