Exodus 3:6
“Moreover he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look at God.”
What does Exodus 3:6 mean?
When Moses encountered God at the burning bush, God identified himself by connecting to Moses' own family line, reaching back through generations to Abraham. This wasn't just a name or title, but an assurance that the God speaking to him was the same faithful God who had walked with his ancestors. Yet Moses' immediate response was fear and reverence, turning his face away because he sensed he was standing in the presence of something utterly holy and beyond himself. That combination of comfort (God knows my family, my history) and awe (this is truly God) captures something real about encountering the divine, even now: we can feel both drawn close and overwhelmed at the same time.
