Exodus 3:21

What does Exodus 3:21 mean?

God is making Moses a promise: when the Israelites leave Egypt, they won't be sent away as penniless refugees but will receive gifts from their Egyptian neighbors. This was a radical assurance to Moses, who faced the enormous task of leading enslaved people to freedom without resources or protection. What makes this promise remarkable is that God isn't just planning their escape, but their dignity and sustenance during it. The Egyptians, who had enslaved these people for generations, would actually supply them with silver, gold, and clothing (as we see later in Exodus 12). This reminds us that God sees the full arc of what we're facing, not just the immediate crisis. When we're called to difficult things, God often provides in ways we can't yet imagine, and sometimes even through unexpected sources.
