“It shall be on Aaron’s forehead, and Aaron shall bear the iniquity of the holy things, which the children of Israel shall make holy in all their holy gifts; and it shall be always on his forehead, that they may be accepted before Yahweh.”
What does Exodus 28:38 mean?
Aaron wore a golden plate on his forehead inscribed with "Holy to the Lord," and this verse describes its spiritual significance: it represented his role as carrying the weight and responsibility of the people's worship. When Israel brought their offerings and gifts to God, any unintentional flaws or shortcomings in how they presented them would be symbolically absorbed by their high priest, ensuring their worship could still be accepted by God. It's a beautiful picture of intercession, where Aaron stood between the people and God, bearing the burden so they wouldn't be rejected. For us today, this points to how Jesus ultimately became our perfect High Priest, carrying our imperfections before God so that we can be accepted not because we're flawless, but because of his sacrifice and standing on our behalf.
