Exodus 25:18
“You shall make two cherubim of hammered gold. You shall make them at the two ends of the mercy seat.”
What does Exodus 25:18 mean?
The cherubim were ornamental figures made of solid gold that stood on either end of the mercy seat (also called the atonement cover), the lid of the Ark of the Covenant. These weren't meant to be frightening or stern, but rather to represent God's presence guarding this most sacred space where God's forgiveness was symbolically extended to the people.
