“Moses entered into the middle of the cloud, and went up on the mountain; and Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.”
What does Exodus 24:18 mean?
After all the preparation and covenant-making at the mountain's base, Moses finally ascended into God's presence, disappearing into the thick cloud that covered Mount Sinai. Those forty days and nights (a number the Bible often uses to mark significant testing or transformation) represent an intimate, extended encounter where Moses received the Ten Commandments and detailed instructions for the tabernacle and priesthood. During this entire time, the people below grew anxious and uncertain, which is why they eventually pressured Aaron to make the golden calf. The contrast is striking: Moses was alone with God in perfect communion while the people, left waiting and wondering, turned to idolatry. It's a poignant reminder of how our faith can falter when we lose sight of God's presence, and how transformative it can be when we deliberately make space to meet with him.
