What does Exodus 23:3 mean?
When someone is poor and vulnerable, our instinct is often to automatically side with them, but this verse warns against letting compassion override justice. The instruction means you shouldn't twist the truth or ignore evidence simply because someone lacks resources and might seem to need your help. In ancient Israel's court system, this was a crucial safeguard: justice had to be fair and honest for everyone, regardless of their economic status. It's paired with the command not to favor the rich either (verse 3 continues this theme). The point isn't coldness toward the poor, but rather treating all people with the same honest standard, so that true justice can actually protect the vulnerable instead of being corrupted even with good intentions.
