What does Exodus 23:13 mean?

God is asking His people to be intentional about what they say and think about, not just what they do. The warning about not speaking the names of other gods wasn't primarily about fear of those gods' power, but about protecting the community's focus and faithfulness. When we constantly invoke or discuss other sources of hope, comfort, or guidance, we naturally drift toward them. This speaks to something many of us experience today: we become what we give our attention to. Whether it's worry, status, money, or anything else we're looking to for ultimate answers, our words and thoughts shape our hearts. God is inviting His people into wholehearted devotion, not through harsh rules but through the gentler wisdom of guarding what we fill our minds and conversations with.
