““For six years you shall sow your land, and shall gather in its increase,”
What does Exodus 23:10 mean?
This is the beginning of God's instruction about the sabbatical year, when the Israelites were to let their fields rest every seventh year. Working the land for six years would have been their normal rhythm, the way they provided for themselves and their families. The pause here, before the verse continues to explain what happens in year seven, reminds us that even in ancient agricultural life, people weren't meant to endlessly squeeze productivity from the earth or themselves. It's a rhythm that assumes both hard work and necessary rest are built into how God designed life to flourish.
