What does Exodus 23:1 mean?
When we're hurt or angry, it's tempting to tell others a twisted version of what happened, especially if we can get them on our side. This verse warns against that impulse in two ways: first, by speaking lies about someone, and second, by deliberately allying with others to damage someone's reputation through false testimony. The instruction assumes we live in community with real consequences, where our words shape how people see each other and affect their lives. It's calling us toward honesty not because rules are rigid, but because truth-telling is how we protect each other and build trust.
